"I think people missed the whole new generation of gif posters who drove a lot of the analytics folks into passive readers. The site got a little ‘cheerleadery’ and beer league in the last year or so. At a glance it kinda seems like the authorship dictates the readership some. True. One thing to consider though. Pavs and Thornton are both slower than they were 3 seasons ago when the PP was on fire. Now they have to have the perfect passes because they are less likely to retrieve a puck.

You guys need to go watch the 56 goal Cheechoo highlight tape.
In that, the powerplay has a bunch of people moving around constantly in order to get the defense to move and open shooting lanes. Problem is, now everyone sort of just stays in their spot, and the PKers only have to change their angle to keep all the lanes closed.

If you want a shooting PP unit
Burns, Marleau, Hertl, Pavs, Thornton.
You get better puck retrieval and boards play with Hertl than you do Couture. Pavelski can park his ass in front of the net for the Burns tip while Marleau, Hertl and Thornton work the boards. Hertl, Thornton down low and Marleau on the half board / 2nd point position.

Doesn't make sense on the PP. He is really good at a lot of things, but isn't great on the boards, doesn't shift well to cover the point and to make things worse, his best asset (his shot) is never used since the 1st unit runs through Burns. Wasted commodity on the first unit.

Meier and Labanc are good forecheckers. Replace a slower player on the PP unit with one of them and you are more likely to sustain offensive zone pressure.

True. One thing to consider though. Pavs and Thornton are both slower than they were 3 seasons ago when the PP was on fire. Now they have to have the perfect passes because they are less likely to retrieve a puck.

You guys need to go watch the 56 goal Cheechoo highlight tape.
In that, the powerplay has a bunch of people moving around constantly in order to get the defense to move and open shooting lanes. Problem is, now everyone sort of just stays in their spot, and the PKers only have to change their angle to keep all the lanes closed.

If you want a shooting PP unit
Burns, Marleau, Hertl, Pavs, Thornton.
You get better puck retrieval and boards play with Hertl than you do Couture. Pavelski can park his ass in front of the net for the Burns tip while Marleau, Hertl and Thornton work the boards. Hertl, Thornton down low and Marleau on the half board / 2nd point position.

Doesn't make sense on the PP. He is really good at a lot of things, but isn't great on the boards, doesn't shift well to cover the point and to make things worse, his best asset (his shot) is never used since the 1st unit runs through Burns. Wasted commodity on the first unit.

Meier and Labanc are good forecheckers. Replace a slower player on the PP unit with one of them and you are more likely to sustain offensive zone pressure.
