Recap: Sharks 6, Detroit 3
Golden State Gopher 8 January 2017
The Sharks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 6 to 3 in the second meeting between the two teams this season. Gritmeister Michael Haley sat this one out as Mikkel Boedker drew back in to the lineup.
The first period of play took some time to get going. The Red Wings struck first, as a Thomas Vanek pass took a bad bounce and beat Martin Jones at 12:49 of the first period. The Sharks struck back quickly, however. Joonas Donskoi tipped in a shot from Tommy Wingels at 15:59, and for the remainder of the first period it was all Sharks. Mirco Mueller broke the tie less than two minutes later with his first goal of the season, and Patty Marleau added another goal to end the period, as his shot was influenced by the stick of Danny Dekeyser, bringing him to within 7 goals of the mythical 500 career goals mark.
The second period began with a goalie change, as Jared Coreau was replaced by Petr Mrazek. Less than two minutes into the period Martin Jones made an acrobatic save on a wide open Tomas Tatar, keeping the score 3-1. The two goalies traded some strong saves, as both teams traded offensive chances, and the score remained the same at the end of two.
The third period brought the Sharks that elusive 5th goal. Joe "Captain America" Pavelski tipped a Brent Burns shot for his 14th goal of the season, and the Sharks 4th of the game. Mikkel Boedker then scored the 5th goal, only his third of the season.
But that wasn't the end of the scoring. Detroit brought the score back to within 3, as Anthony Mantha potted a goal to make the score 5-2. Danny Dekeyser scored his second goal of the game for the Sharks, tipping a Joe Pavelski shot into the net. The goal was Pavelski's 600th career point. Andreas Athanasiou scored his 7th goal of the season to make the game 6-3. That would end the scoring, and the Sharks would skate away with their first win in four games. Mirco Mueller was mysteriously benched for the third period, and the Sharks rolled with 5 D-men for the remainder of the game.
